IEW Symposium 2024

International Education Week Symposium

Theme 2024: Beyond Borders: Learn, Share, Connect

On November 21, 2024, 5 pm-7pm in the Mellon Board Room, the Global Engagement Office will host a mini symposium to celebrate International Education Week. International Education week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to “promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences.” The event celebrates the benefits of international education and exchange.

The theme is “Beyond Borders: Learn, Share, Connect”

This theme is designed to break down the physical, cultural, and informational barriers that may prevent students from exploring international education opportunities, both physical borders including traveling abroad, and academic borders, such as learning something new. The theme emphasizes the accessibility of global experiences and highlights the personal growth that comes from these experiences.

We invite you to participate in the symposium and submit proposals to present in one of the following formats: a five-minute ted-talk style presentation, or a poster presentation.

This is a formal academic event, which can be added to your resume/CV. Students will gain professional development and public speaking skills and can be mentored by a staff member in preparing for the symposium.

In addition, the two best presentations (poster or ted-talk) voted by the audience will receive a gift card of $20 each.

Five-minute talk

Please choose one of the following prompts and respond to it.

  1. Cultural Insights: What surprised you most about studying in your host country, and how has your experience inspired you to explore new cultures and opportunities?

  2. Communicating Across Cultures: What was a memorable challenge you faced in communicating across cultures, and how did you overcome it?

  4. Global Networks: How did the connections you made abroad shape your global perspective?

  5. Overcoming Fear: What fear or hesitation did you overcome to study abroad, and how did it change your life?
